Description: Significant progress continues to unfold regarding the Counseling Compact, offering licensed mental health counselors a new pathway to practice across state lines. This webinar will provide an important update on the current status of the Compact, including which states have enacted the compact and what implementation looks like moving forward. Attendees will learn how the Compact works, how to obtain the privilege to practice in participating states, and considerations to evaluate before delivering services under another state’s jurisdiction.

About the Presenter:

Greg Searls is a licensed funeral service practitioner in the State of Wyoming. He began his work in the regulatory world when he was appointed by the Governor of Wyoming to serve on the Board of Funeral Service Practitioners in 2010. In 2016, he resigned from the Board when he was hired as an Executive Director in the State of Wyoming Professional Licensing Board office.

Greg served as the Executive Director for the Mental Health Professions Licensing Board, Board of Registration in Podiatry, Board of Midwifery, Board of Examiners in Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists, Board of Hearing Aid Specialists, Board of Athletic Trainers, and Board of Occupational Therapist.

During his time as executive director, Wyoming passed the statutes to join the ASLP-IC, Occupational Therapy Compact, and Counseling Compact. He served as the ex-officio representative to the Counseling Compact Commission for AASCB until Wyoming joined the compact and he was named commissioner for his home state.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science and a certificate of Gerontology from Gannon University in Erie, Pennsylvania, and an Associate’s Degree in Specialized Funeral Service Technology from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.

Greg is co-author of the article Counseling and the Interstate Compact: Navigating Ethical Practice Across State Lines published in The Professional Counselor in the fall of 2023.

Description: People often seek therapy to “process” their lives in some way. By speaking with a clinician who reflects back their story, offers perspectives, and provides psychological education, many people find a catharsis in being understood and validated. But does that change anything for the client? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy shows us that a phenomenon called “experiential avoidance” can often develop a set of tricky behaviors that appear to be beneficial (topography) but are actually ways of avoiding change (function). When this happens, both clinician and client can walk away feeling good about a session when possibly the therapist has reinforced unhelpful behaviors, not intervened on them. This workshop explores experiential avoidance and how it may show up in session. It explores what may be going on within the clinician and the client and how to use that information to intervene using a kind of immediacy ACT is known for but is often under-utilized by ACT clinicians. While a basic understanding in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or behavior analysis may help you, it's not necessary to benefit from what this workshop has to offer: Didactic learning, case examples, and experiential learning to help you catch when processing is problematic and how to reorient the therapy towards the goal: change.

Description: This presentation provides a comprehensive examination of trauma-informed care, specifically as it applies to military and law enforcement-affiliated populations, to prepare mental health professionals with the skills and understanding needed to better serve these clients. Specifically, the presentation recognizes that military and law enforcement members and their families represent unique populations with distinctive cultures and experiences that leave them vulnerable to traumatic events that can lead to physical, psychological, social, and spiritual consequences. Through members’ responsibilities to protect themselves and others through severe threats and in challenging environments, often at the expense of their own physical and emotional safety, they incur stress and navigate traumatic experiences that may additionally impact their families. Despite these risks, affiliated clients may be hesitant and have challenges accessing responsive mental healthcare due to concerns of clinicians’ lack of cultural understanding, personal fears and hesitancies, impacts to career trajectory, logistics of the position, pervasive mental health stigma, and lack of availability, leaving them at risk of increased post-traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and serious mental health concerns, including risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. While awareness of these mental health needs is increasing, clinicians often are not adequately trained and prepared to aid military and law enforcement members, veterans, and their families. Incorporating the most up-to-date research findings and evidence-based practices, the presenters will provide tools to bridge this gap and enable participants to develop a deeper awareness of these populations, to overcome barriers to care, and to gain practical knowledge and trauma-informed clinical skills to navigate experiences and symptoms of trauma with military and law enforcement clients.

Through her faculty position at NSU, Dr. Tinstman Jones engages in research to further understanding and competencies in these areas and in support of military members and families, and she provides instruction and supervision to clinicians in training to provide trauma responsive care. Her research has led to several peer-reviewed publications and presentations.

Amanda DiLorenzo-Garcia is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Prescott College and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. She completed her doctorate at the University of Central Florida and her Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Florida. Dr. DiLorenzo-Garcia's research interests include ambiguous loss and readjustment, grief and trauma, and self-compassion. Dr. DiLorenzo-Garcia studies the loss and growth experienced by family members of mass shootings survivors and primary survivors. Internationally, she has worked in Haiti since 2011 with P4H Global, a sustainable development nonprofit, and completed counseling related work in Dominica. This workshop introduces a polyvagal-informed framework for supporting trauma recovery while simultaneously protecting counselors from the effects of vicarious trauma. Event-focused desensitization and one-size-fits-all protocols can overlook the complex, layered nature of memory and human adaptation. FMHCA Annual Conference Refund Policy

Cancellation and Refunds:

Registrants who are unable to attend the FMHCA Annual Conference must notify FMHCA at least 14 business days prior to the conference date to receive a refund.
Failure to notify FMHCA within the specified timeframe will result in the registrant being charged the full registration fee, if applicable.
Please Note: All conference registrations purchased at the previous year's conference at a discounted rate are non-refundable.

Cancellation Requests:

All cancellation requests must be made and confirmed in writing by the applicant via the email account used during conference registration. These requests should be sent to office@flmhca.org.
Refunds will be processed using the original payment method and issued to the original payee only.

No Show Policy:

Applicants who have not checked in by the start time of the conference will be considered a "No Show." In such cases, the applicant’s seat, registration, and any associated credits will be forfeited.
There are no refunds for "No Shows," partial attendance, late arrivals, early departures, or failure to participate in the conference as scheduled.

Transfer Policy:

Conference registrations are transferable to another individual within 3 days of the conference. To initiate a transfer, please contact office@flmhca.org with the details of the new attendee.

Professional Conduct:

If the FMHCA Annual Conference is canceled due to low registration, inclement weather, or other unforeseen circumstances, participants will be notified, and any fees paid will be refunded.
