Description: This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of women's mental health based on the most up-to-date research and statistics. It introduces practitioners to The Gender Health Gap and the importance of biorhythm knowledge in women’s mental health outcomes. The focus of this work is on how we care for naturally menstruating women in practice and personally, as a female dominated industry. Description: People often seek therapy to “process” their lives in some way. By speaking with a clinician who reflects back their story, offers perspectives, and provides psychological education, many people find a catharsis in being understood and validated. But does that change anything for the client? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy shows us that a phenomenon called “experiential avoidance” can often develop a set of tricky behaviors that appear to be beneficial (topography) but are actually ways of avoiding change (function). When this happens, both clinician and client can walk away feeling good about a session when possibly the therapist has reinforced unhelpful behaviors, not intervened on them. This workshop explores experiential avoidance and how it may show up in session. It explores what may be going on within the clinician and the client and how to use that information to intervene using a kind of immediacy ACT is known for but is often under-utilized by ACT clinicians. While a basic understanding in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or behavior analysis may help you, it's not necessary to benefit from what this workshop has to offer: Didactic learning, case examples, and experiential learning to help you catch when processing is problematic and how to reorient the therapy towards the goal: change.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Aaron Norton is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with certifications in addictions, alcohol and drug counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical mental health counseling, trauma treatment, forensic mental health evaluation, forensic behavioral analysis, and forensic psychometry. He serves as executive director of the National Board of Forensic Evaluators, assistant professor of instruction at the University of South Dept. of Mental Health Law & Policy, International Counseling Task Force chair for the American Mental Health Counselors Association, and chair of the Government Relations Committee for the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association. He co-authored the forensic evaluation section of the “AMHCA Standards for the Practice of Clinical Mental Health Counseling,” authored the proposal for AMHCA’s Clinical Mental Health Specialist in Forensic Evaluation (CMHS-FE) credential, served on the expert panel that created the standards and written exam for the Florida Certification Board’s Certified Telehealth Practitioner (CTP) credential, and has been published in several journals and professional magazines. He has 20 years of experience as a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor.

Corinne Mixon is a registered professional lobbyist with fifteen years of experience representing clients’ state governmental interests. At Rutledge Ecenia, Corinne represents a broad client base with a particular emphasis on health care practitioners, education and regulated industries and professions. While earning her BA from the University of Alabama’s School of Communications and Information Sciences, Corinne garnered an internship in the Washington, D.C. office of U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, thus igniting her interest in professional lobbying and politics. Description: This presentation provides a comprehensive examination of trauma-informed care, specifically as it applies to military and law enforcement-affiliated populations, to prepare mental health professionals with the skills and understanding needed to better serve these clients. Specifically, the presentation recognizes that military and law enforcement members and their families represent unique populations with distinctive cultures and experiences that leave them vulnerable to traumatic events that can lead to physical, psychological, social, and spiritual consequences. Through members’ responsibilities to protect themselves and others through severe threats and in challenging environments, often at the expense of their own physical and emotional safety, they incur stress and navigate traumatic experiences that may additionally impact their families. Despite these risks, affiliated clients may be hesitant and have challenges accessing responsive mental healthcare due to concerns of clinicians’ lack of cultural understanding, personal fears and hesitancies, impacts to career trajectory, logistics of the position, pervasive mental health stigma, and lack of availability, leaving them at risk of increased post-traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and serious mental health concerns, including risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. While awareness of these mental health needs is increasing, clinicians often are not adequately trained and prepared to aid military and law enforcement members, veterans, and their families. Incorporating the most up-to-date research findings and evidence-based practices, the presenters will provide tools to bridge this gap and enable participants to develop a deeper awareness of these populations, to overcome barriers to care, and to gain practical knowledge and trauma-informed clinical skills to navigate experiences and symptoms of trauma with military and law enforcement clients.

Through her faculty position at NSU, Dr. Tinstman Jones engages in research to further understanding and competencies in these areas and in support of military members and families, and she provides instruction and supervision to clinicians in training to provide trauma responsive care. Her research has led to several peer-reviewed publications and presentations.

Amanda DiLorenzo-Garcia is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Prescott College and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. She completed her doctorate at the University of Central Florida and her Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Florida. Dr. DiLorenzo-Garcia's research interests include ambiguous loss and readjustment, grief and trauma, and self-compassion. Dr. DiLorenzo-Garcia studies the loss and growth experienced by family members of mass shootings survivors and primary survivors. Internationally, she has worked in Haiti since 2011 with P4H Global, a sustainable development nonprofit, and completed counseling related work in Dominica. Dr. DiLorenzo-Garcia is passionate about connecting clinical work with her teaching and research. She continues to dedicate herself to the Alachua County Crisis Center as a Clinical Supervisor.

Description: Working with trauma survivors requires clinicians to be attuned not only to their clients’ nervous systems but also to their own. This workshop introduces a polyvagal-informed framework for supporting trauma recovery while simultaneously protecting counselors from the effects of vicarious trauma. Participants will learn how to integrate nervous-system-based strategies that enhance client safety and regulation, including grounding, breathwork, and the therapeutic use of voice and presence. Equally, the workshop emphasizes counselor self-regulation as an essential tool for preventing vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. Through lecture and experiential practices, attendees will develop a dual toolkit: one for stabilizing and expanding client regulation, and another for monitoring and shifting their own autonomic states during and after sessions. By strengthening both sides of the therapeutic relationship, clinicians will leave with concrete practices that promote client healing and sustain professional resilience.

With over 17 years of experience in clinical practice, counselor education, and supervision, Dr. Kratimenos integrates evidence-based and holistic approaches to address trauma, addiction, and co-occurring mood disorders. Dr. Kratimenos earned her Doctor of Education in Counselor Education and Supervision from National Louis University, where she also serves as an adjunct professor. Her teaching portfolio includes courses such as Treating Substance Abuse in Counseling, Psychopathology, Career Development and Life Work Planning, and Advanced Multicultural Issues in Counseling. She has presented nationally for organizations such as the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES), American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA), and Florida Counseling Association (FCA). Her recent scholarly work focuses on dual diagnosis, counselor wellness, and integrating mind-body resilience practices into mental health training. Description: This presentation invites mental health professionals to critically examine persistent challenges in trauma treatment, focusing on three key limitations: symptom-centered care, protocol-driven rigidity, and cultural or relational blind spots that can undermine client engagement. Many current interventions emphasize symptom suppression, unintentionally pathologizing natural human responses by treating pain and distress as problems to eliminate rather than as signals pointing to deeper, unintegrated experiences. Event-focused desensitization and one-size-fits-all protocols can overlook the complex, layered nature of memory and human adaptation. Additionally, positioning the clinician as the primary expert risks reinforcing bias, creating cultural disconnects, and limiting what clients feel safe to share. This session introduces a capacity-focused, integrative framework that supports clinicians in recognizing distress as meaningful signals rather than symptoms to suppress. These principles are formalized in Critical Memory Integration (CMI™) - an emerging, evidence-informed approach grounded in contemporary neuroscience, memory reconsolidation research, and somatic and emotion-focused therapies. Brian Livesay, PhD, is the Director of Research at ARISE Alliance Institute, where he co-leads the development and training of Critical Memory Integration (CMI™), a neuroscience-informed, experiential model designed to foster deep and sustainable healing. He earned his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Idaho State University and completed his clinical psychology internship at the Veterans Affairs Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System. He is also a practicing clinician at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center, providing services to Student Veterans across Northern Colorado and Southeastern Wyoming and contributing to VA internship and fellowship training programs. Dr. Livesay’s research and clinical interests focus on PTSD, moral injury, and the development of experiential therapies for stress and trauma-related conditions. He has contributed to the field through research on treatment effectiveness, diagnostic considerations, and the integration of innovative approaches for trauma care, sharing his work through publications, conference presentations, and professional training programs.

Estefana Johnson, LCSW, is the Director of Clinical Training for ARISE Alliance Institute, where she co-leads the development and implementation of Critical Memory Integration (CMI) - a neuroscience-informed, experiential model designed to promote deep, sustainable healing. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker and trauma therapist with over two decades of experience, she has worked across residential treatment, medical social work, clinical training, and community-based care, bringing a strong foundation in relational and culturally responsive practice. Scott Jones has been training and teaching for 10 years and owner of New Directions Counseling since 2013. He relies on interaction and uses questions along with group scenarios to guide and train and looks for input from the class. Description: Relational trauma often develops within family systems and can result in rigid relational roles, attachment disruptions, and recurring patterns of dysregulated relationships. While traditional insight-oriented therapies help clients understand these patterns cognitively, experiential approaches allow clinicians to work directly with emotional and relational processes as they emerge in the present moment. These approaches can help clients recognize and reorganize relational dynamics that are often maintained outside conscious awareness. This presentation provides advanced clinical skill development in the use of experiential methods for working with relational trauma within a structured and contained therapeutic framework. Experiential approaches rooted in Gestalt therapy, psychodrama, and family systems theory, originally developed by pioneers such as Fritz Perls, Jacob Moreno, and Virginia Satir, utilize techniques such as family sculpting, role-play, inner child work, and psychomotor interventions to help clients identify entrenched relational roles and explore corrective emotional experiences in a clinically supported environment. Participants will observe a structured clinical demonstration of a hypothetical alcoholic family system sculpture illustrating systemic roles such as hero, scapegoat, lost child, and mascot. The demonstration will illustrate how experiential interventions can illuminate family dynamics, deepen client insight, and facilitate relational reorganization. The material presented reflects trauma-informed and evidence-informed clinical practices supported by contemporary experiential and trauma treatment literature, including work by Dayton (2021), Fisher (2021), and Giacomucci (2021). Emphasis will be placed on therapist attunement, pacing, containment, and ethical use of experiential interventions in clinical practice. Ethical considerations, client readiness, therapist competence, and scope of practice will be addressed throughout the presentation. Cancellation and Refunds:

Registrants who are unable to attend the FMHCA Annual Conference must notify FMHCA at least 14 business days prior to the conference date to receive a refund.
Failure to notify FMHCA within the specified timeframe will result in the registrant being charged the full registration fee, if applicable.
Please Note: All conference registrations purchased at the previous year's conference at a discounted rate are non-refundable.

Cancellation Requests:

All cancellation requests must be made and confirmed in writing by the applicant via the email account used during conference registration. These requests should be sent to office@flmhca.org.
Refunds will be processed using the original payment method and issued to the original payee only.

No Show Policy:

Applicants who have not checked in by the start time of the conference will be considered a "No Show." In such cases, the applicant’s seat, registration, and any associated credits will be forfeited.

Transfer Policy:

Description: This course is designed for mental health professionals who are interested in developing their skills in clinical supervision and pursuing the Qualified Supervisor credential through the state of Florida. The course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively supervise therapists, including how to establish a collaborative relationship, provide feedback, and promote professional growth.

This course meets State of Florida education requirements for LMHCs, LCSWs, & LMFTs to become credentialed as a Qualified Supervisor.

About the Presenters:

Logan Bell is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, National Certified Counselor, and Qualified Supervisor in the state of Florida. He works across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum helping patients navigate aspects of development and managing comorbid mental health concerns. Logan specializes in work with severe mood disorders, including bipolar disorder, active suicidal ideation, and death work, operating from a psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral lens. Logan also works with LGBTQIA+ advocacy groups and aims to help other clinicians better understand the law, ethics, and ways to help.
