Description: This 8-hour training is designed to support Florida Registered Mental Health Interns in developing the foundational knowledge, clinical awareness, and professional competencies necessary for ethical and effective practice under Chapter 491, Florida Statutes. The course provides an overview of legal and ethical responsibilities, documentation standards, supervision expectations, risk management strategies, multicultural considerations, professional boundaries, and clinical best practices within outpatient mental health settings. Participants will strengthen their understanding of professional identity development, informed consent, confidentiality, mandated reporting requirements, and practical applications of Florida laws and rules governing mental health professionals. The training emphasizes real-world clinical decision-making, ethical problem-solving, and preparation for competent independent practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify key components of Chapter 491, Florida Statutes, and Rule 64B4 relevant to registered intern practice and licensure requirements.
  2. Describe ethical responsibilities related to confidentiality, informed consent, professional boundaries, and mandated reporting in clinical mental health settings.
  3. Apply appropriate clinical documentation standards, including progress notes, treatment planning, and risk assessment documentation consistent with legal and insurance expectations.
  4. Recognize common ethical dilemmas and utilize ethical decision-making models to address complex clinical situations.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of supervision requirements, professional accountability, and scope of practice for registered interns in Florida.
  6. Identify risk management strategies related to client safety, suicidality, abuse reporting, duty to warn, and crisis intervention.
  7. Examine the impact of cultural humility, diversity, and client-centered care in therapeutic relationships and treatment planning.
  8. Develop professional self-awareness and strategies for maintaining clinician wellness, reducing burnout, and supporting long-term professional effectiveness.

About the Presenter: 

For over 20 years, Terrini M. Woods has walked alongside individuals, couples, and families as they navigate life's challenges and transitions. She began her counseling journey in ministry as a lay counselor and co-leader for couples, which sparked her passion for relationship work and emotional healing. In 2011, she began her Master's degree journey in counseling, where she provided individual and group therapy for individuals living with chronic mental health challenges and supported teen mothers in a local group home setting. Today, in private practice, she serves a diverse range of clients with compassion, honesty, and care. Terrini values the role faith can play in healing while honoring each person's unique journey. She is also a Restorative Justice practitioner, committed to fostering accountability, growth, and restoration in individuals, families, and communities. To stay updated with current mental wellness trends and resources, she serves as a board member of the South Florida Christian Counselors Association, an active member of the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association, and the Palm Beach County Association of Mental Health Counselors. In the field of restorative justice, Terrini is a board member of the Florida Restorative Justice Association and an active member and Circle Keeper of the National Association of Community and Restorative Justice.
