Worlds of Healing: an Introduction to Sandtray Therapy in Play Therapy

Description: This 8-hour training presents a HANDS-ON learning opportunity for mental health clinicians seeking introductory knowledge of Sandtray Therapy in Play Therapy. In this highly INTERACTIVE and EXPERIENTIAL workshop, participants create and process their own Sandtrays to deepen the learning process. During this training, the origins of Sandtray Therapy are explored with the utmost honor to our historical leaders that came before us. Participants in this training learn a variety of ways to introduce Sandtray therapy to clients, as well as HOW TO set up a Sandtray Therapy space practically and effectively. Participants in this workshop also clarify their role as a “witness” during the process. INTENTIONALLY moving along the directive/non-directive continuum in Sandtray Therapy sessions with clients utilizing basic Play Therapy reflective skills is a foundational element of this workshop. Great respect is placed on the concept of how to keep clients’ Sandtray worlds SAFE and PROTECTED throughout the process. Participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring their own miniatures to use during the experiential portions of the workshop. Materials for the workshop are included in the overall cost of this program.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Participants will contrast and compare differences between sandTRAY and sandPLAY in play therapy.
2. Participants will be able to explain the historical context of Sandtray Therapy and Play Therapy with reference to applicable theoretical foundations.
3. Participants will be able list 3 considerations for clinicians to deliver Sandtray Therapy safety and ethically in Play Therapy.
4. Participants will be able to demonstrate how to introduce Sandtray Therapy in Play Therapy to child, adolescent, and adult clients.
5. Participants will be able to explain the clinicians’  role as a “witness” while conducting Sandtray Therapy in Play Therapy sessions.
6. Participants will be able to explain the significance of symbolism and metaphors in Sandtray Therapy.
7. Participants will be able to list 3 common directives utilized in Sandtray Therapy sessions in Play Therapy. 
8. Participants will apply directive and non-directive clinical skills to conduct Sandtray Therapy sessions with clients utilizing Play Therapy reflective skills.  
9. Participants will apply at least 3 methods of therapeutically supporting clients of all ages through the therapeutic use of the Sandtray, sand, and symbolic miniature objects.
10. Participants will be able to explain how to optimally create a Sandtray therapeutic space in Play Therapy to include a selection of sand(s), tray(s), and symbolic miniatures. 
11. Participants will be able to list the categories of Sandtray Therapy miniatures.
12. Participants will be able to list applicable therapeutic powers of Play in Sandtray Therapy.
13. Participants will be able to list 3 Sandtray Therapy directives in Play Therapy in a variety of settings including with individuals, dyads, families, and groups.  
14. Participants will be able to conduct Sandtray Therapy with children, youth, adults, and families.

About the Presenter:

Jackie Flynn is a Registered Play Therapist, Certified EMDR therapist and an EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Approved Provider for the Association for Play Therapy, EMDRIA Approved Advanced trainer, as well as an Education Consultant supporting school systems with professional development training for teachers and administrators, a private practitioner of a Play Therapy practice in Central Florida, an author, as well as an internationally known speaker.  Sandtray therapy, in-person and online, is at the heart of her practice, as she has witnessed immense healing from clients across the lifespan in her years of clinical practice.  Jackie earned a certification from ILS, Integrated Listening Systems, to provide the Safe and Sound Protocol, or SSP, a non-invasive application of Polyvagal Theory to individuals of all ages to help them heal through an intervention involving listening to therapeutically modified music in support of regulation of the autonomic nervous system. While Jackie is known best for her work with children, teens and families, she also works with individuals of all ages integrating PLAY Therapy at every opportunity. Driven by her desire to greatly reduce the amount of suffering in the world, she takes pride in her experiential trainings, consultations, and development of clinical resources for child therapists. Her expertise in Telehealth has allowed her to help clinicians from all over the world deliver the healing power of Play and EMDR therapies to people of all ages virtually.  Jackie is the host of the Play Therapy Community Podcast, which has been downloaded over 450,000 times in over 55 countries.
