Description: Counselor education and training is scarce regarding the military culture and the significance of implementing military cultural competence when working with Military personnel and their families. This session will provide an overview of how military ethos and culture are infused into the military populace and the significance of adopting military-specific protocols into counseling practices. Attendees will assess their own knowledge and gain effective methods of integrating a culturally competent style when working with this complex and dynamic population.

About the Presenter: Maria Giuliana, LMHC
Maria Giuliana, LMHC is an Ed D Student in the Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) Program at Argosy University Tampa. She is employed by Magellan Health as a Military Family Life Counselor providing support services to eligible Service members and their families. She is also the founder and Clinical Director of Beyond The Matter Counseling and Consulting Services LLC in Jacksonville, FL providing therapy for individuals, couples and families in office and via tele-therapy. She is Regional Director (East) of Veterans Counseling Veterans and serves as a committee member of FMHCA Military Services Committee. As a 20-year Navy Veteran, her knowledge and expertise has been cultivated over the past 30 years along the backdrop of clinical, professional and personal affiliations with Service members, Veterans and their families. Her current research foci include military cultural competencies in counseling, counselor education and supervision.
