Description: The counseling code of ethics makes sense and is simple in theory. However, counselors work with real people, and real people are messy and do not fit into perfect boxes. This leads to ethical issues arising in daily practice that are not easily recognized. Further, counselors can easily become desensitized to these issues, as they happen so often. This can lead to counselors acting unethically without realizing it, resulting in clients being harmed. This presentation will identify and examine ethical issues that commonly arise in counseling practice that are often overlooked. Practical ways of improving ability to identify issues will be explored, as well as ways of ethically dealing with these issues in the future.
