Description:

The course is designed to cover three areas necessary to pass the NCMHCE: knowing how the exam is constructed, knowing what areas are covered on the exam, and learning a structured approach for diagnosing the case studies presented in the exam. Many times, students and individuals that are in the field but not licensed will approach the exam in the same manner that they deal with clients according to the policy and procedures of the agency they are working in. However, the exam is based more on a theoretical construct and evidence-based practices back by research. Not having access to the DSM-5 during the exam also adds another dimension that requires the student to memorize criteria, durations and differentials that compounds the difficulty of this exam.

Linton Hutchinson, Ph.D. has a degree in Counseling Psychology and Mental Health Counseling.  He has dedicated his entire career to working with students who are on the road to becoming therapists. Linton has taught every course from Principles of Counseling to Research and Assessment and has worked with medical students at St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies and taught counseling at the University of the South Pacific in the Fiji Islands. Back in the States, Linton continued his teaching at Nova Southeastern University, University of Central Florida, Troy State, and Rollins College. He was the first Regional Coordinator for Webster University where he designed and developed their Mental Health Counseling Program in Florida. For the past 22 years, he has prepared students for licensure online at CounselingExam.com and currently offers Master Classes covering the DSM-5. His passion is dream analysis and he has presented seminars worldwide on using dreams in the counseling setting.

Barton Bott, LMHC, NCC, ICGC-II, has been a licensed counselor for over 20 years, but counseling was his second career. He served in active military duty for the U.S. Navy for 30 years. While he served, he began pursuing his career in counseling at the age of forty-two. To gain his initial licensure as a counselor, he worked evenings and weekends at a local clinic. When he closed out his naval career in south Georgia, he got his licensure in the state of Florida and has been working as a therapist ever since. Barton is an Intern Supervisor in the state of Florida and regularly offers workshops and tutoring for students and professionals working to pass the NCMHCE through his website, PasstheNCMHCE.com. Barton is also on the team and expert tutor for CounselingExam.com. He and his wife run an animal shelter for elderly and abandoned dogs. When he is not counseling or loving on animals, you can find Barton voraciously reading books of all genres. He is also a huge Trekkie.

Stacy Frost has been the Educational Director for CounselingExam.com for over 8 years. She came to the counseling education field through the back door of her work in microbiology. A life-long curiosity of human psychology combined with a background in science and art lead her to embark on a journey to teach others about the intricacies of the diagnostic process. As an educator, Stacy is passionate about the learning process and enjoys working with therapists who are preparing for licensure. She brings her artistic talents to the CounselingExam.com team by striving to provide study material that is as interactive and engaging as possible. Stacy is also a skilled coach with expertise in test anxiety who works with students to overcome their fears and obstacles to licensure. When she's not reading the DSM-5, she's busy gardening, creating fairy houses, quilting, and looking for inspiration for her next creative project.
