Exploring Metaphors In Play Therapy: Utilizing Play Therapy, Sandtray, and Expressive Therapy

Description: In this 2 day training, participants will be grounded in theories of Adlerian and Child Centered play therapy, sandtray therapy, and principles of Expressive Therapy. We will review categories of miniatures as well as selecting and displaying them. Developmental information and behaviors specific to children’s use of sandtray will be covered. Theoretical approaches, both directive and non-directive, will be included with examples of how to create and enhance metaphors in play therapy sessions.  This training will be experiential and lecture based.

Learning Objectives:

• Identify basic principles of Adlerian and Child Centered Play Therapy.
• Analyze the history and rationale for sandtray therapy and its connection to play therapy.
• Participants will gain knowledge of how to select appropriate sand, trays, and play therapy miniatures
• Explain the concept of metaphors in play therapy.
• Describe three key components of creating metaphors in the play therapy session.
• Discuss and process a sandtray within a play therapy session.
• Explain one reason that play therapists should not interpret the metaphors which often appear in the children’s sandtray stories.
• List 4 questions or observations that play therapists can use in witnessing and/or processing sandtrays with children
• Recite principles of Expressive Therapy and assess how to integrate them into a play therapy session.
