"I don't know what to do!": Ethical Dilemmas and Professional Accountability in Healthcare Settings
Description: The healthcare treatment environment, altered drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic, requires licensees serving adults, children, and families receiving health/mental health care to enhance their practice using a current, updated framework to ensure ethical and legal compliance. This course updates clinicians in 3 major areas: 1) Reviews recent changes to Codes of Ethics (NASW, 2018/2021; AMHCA, 2015/2020, and AAM&FT, 2015) focusing on use of technology and electronic communications, cultural competency/awareness, personal boundaries/self-care, communication safeguards, documentation, storage, and transfer of records, and practice mandates across legal borders. 2) Reviews compliance requirements with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Federal statute (2018) to heighten compliance in providing full access/use of provider websites to those with visual/auditory limitations, paralleling updated Codes of Ethics and technology applications in service delivery. 3) Reviews major changes to Chapter 765, Florida Health Care Advance Directive Act (2015) that opened communications between future patients and their appointed representatives, assigned new roles to physicians and hospitals, and provided (for the first time in Florida), a healthcare surrogate appointment for minors. In combining Codes of Ethics and bioethics with applied assessment tools and practice models, clinicians can quickly identify, target, and deliver services compliant with ethical and legal mandates. The course concludes with a case study examining ethical/bioethical dilemmas and models of care within a case study assessment.

Description: First responders are a unique population that presents with unique needs. As a professional counsellor working with this population, cultural awareness is key to successfully working with these individuals and groups, whether it is through psychoeducational workshops, individual counseling, critical incident debriefings, or peer support programs. As a professional counsellor who developed the skills and awareness to specialize in working with first responders in private practice, Dr. Kirstin Dolby developed a resource for first responders as her dissertation project (www.friess.ca). She has utilized the various trainings and experiences working locally and internationally to develop a unique set of skills that have resulted in successful integration of effective treatments and preventative measures for first responders. Her current project includes becoming a first responder, integrating into the culture, and developing custom resources and presentations to meet the needs of local responders, specifically volunteer firefighters. Even with extensive experience and training, Kirstin struggled to connect with the local fire department members, even with the support of the then Fire Chief. As a result, she sought a “win win” situation of applying, competing, and making the 2022 recruitment class. Dr. Kirstin Dolby has since successfully completed recruitment training and is a licensed EMA-FR, Level II Firefighter, and Wildland Firefighter in her home Province of British Columbia, Canada. In her presentation, she shares her experiences and insights into how other professional counsellors can develop the skills to effectively work with first responders in their communities, as well as develop appropriate cultural awareness strategies to provide support from the recruitment phase all the way up the chain of command. Effective resources and personal insights into her journey of being a professional counsellor, developing effective resources, and becoming a responder herself will be explored and shared.

Description: Narcissistic Abuse can be devastating. The cycle of abuse is very similar to other types of domestic violence however the way this abuse is applied is quite different. Outside of the relationship, most people see the good side (the mask) that the narcissist presents. The victim can’t understand why others don't see the real person and the victim starts to question their own perceptions. Clinicians need to read between the lines to understand what is really happening in these relationships.Imagine if you had a client walk into a session and you were able to speak the language of the client who has been abused by a narcissist. You could cut down the time it takes to start helping them recover and heal from the pain they have endured in their relationship with a narcissist. Victims of narcissistic abuse are seeking treatment for this particular abuse that has nuances and behaviors that are different and more insidious than other types of abuse. Clients are desperate for a clinician who gets it and are terrified that they will seek treatment and not be believed. Learn the language and the cognitive dissonance and distortions that keep people in these relationships and help them get out.
