Description: Those struggling with emotional disorders tend to experience their emotions more intensely and more often than others. Their emotions are also often experienced out of context with being in the present moment. Often experienced as distress, this response is problematic, as it leads to continued maintenance of symptoms. The Unified Protocol (UP) is designed to help these individuals embrace their emotions and respond to them in more adaptive ways. With the increase in clients presenting to counseling with co-occurring conditions, the UP is a desirable approach for clinicians, as it provides a single treatment modality to address a range of co-occurring disorders. This presentation will provide an overview of the UP model, utilizing practical skills and interventions that clinicians can utilize in their work as well as a case example to demonstrate how the UP can be integrated into various modalities. If we are able to assist our clients in becoming more emotionally tolerant, then we can reduce their need to use unhelpful avoidance strategies to cope with their emotions.
