Description: This presentation will teach mindfulness-based approaches specifically used with clients seeking help for sex and gambling addictions to help attenuate shame, emotional dysregulation, stress proneness, and impulsivity. Neuroscience models of attention will demonstrate how mindfulness enhances neuro-networks enabling these populations to attend more effectively to emotional states and addictive cravings.

Learning Objectives:

1.      Participants will learn and be able to define mindfulness and discuss how its specific mechanisms of action attenuate stress proneness, impulsivity, addictive cravings, and emotional regulation among clients seeking help for problem gambling and sex addiction.

2.      Participants will learn specific mindfulness exercises and concepts that can enhance compliance with this intervention among addicted population. Specifically, participants will be given 3 separate mindfulness scripts used in clinical work with problem gamblers and sex addicts. Further, they will be given a website with additional resources they can use in clinical practice.

3.      Participants will learn current research findings from neuroscience and peer-reviewed studies that support the use of mindfulness as a good fit for behavioral addictions.

About the PresenterDr. Rory Reid 

Dr. Rory Reid holds a master’s degree in social work and a doctorate in clinical psychology with a dual emphasis in Neuropsychology and Marriage and Family Therapy. He completed his post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA and additional post-doctoral training in clinical research through Harvard Medical School. He is currently a Research Psychologist in the Department of Psychiatry at UCLA. Dr. Reid was the Principal Investigator for the DSM-5 Field Trial on the proposed criteria for Hypersexual Disorder and has published numerous research articles on problem gambling and hypersexual behavior in scientific journals. Dr. Reid has worked clinically with hundreds of individuals, couples, and families negatively impacted by hypersexual behavior and problem gambling. His work has been featured in press outlets such as the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, TIME magazine, as well as TV specials on ABC, CBS and Fox News. He serves on the editorial boards for several peer-reviewed journals and has trained and educated mental health professionals, industry specialists, government organizations, and lay audiences around the world.
