The purpose of this course is to provide an orientation and overview of the Florida Laws and Rules for Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns, Registered Marriage and Family Therapist Interns, and Registered Clinical Social Work Interns who are required by the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling to complete an 8-hour Laws and Rules course from an approved provider

This 8-Hour Laws & Rules course fulfills the requirements for Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns, Registered Clinical Social Worker Interns and Registered Marriage & Family Therapist Interns who are required by Chapter 491, Florida Statutes to complete an 8-Hour Laws and Rules Course.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of this course is to provide basic knowledge of the laws and rules governing the practice of mental health counselors, family and marriage therapists, and clinical social workers. The purpose is to adequately educate interns in the field to increase compliance with State Statutes. After completing this course, the reader should be able to:

  • Identify the laws and rules associated with confidentiality and record keeping for mental health professionals.
  • Better Understand the legal and ethical boundaries established for supervision in the mental health professions.
  • Identify some of the most common issues that tend to arise on the client-therapist professional relationship.
  • Articulate the clinical standards of practice for mental health professionals in Florida.
  • Understand the disciplinary actions that may be taken against mental health professionals who violate state laws.
