A therapeutic tool that promotes self-healing, reflection, and growth, expressive writing is healthy for both the heart and soul. Expressive writing has been widely used within the mental health field, as a way to assist clients with insight into their thoughts, feeling, and actions. The purpose of this session is to provide mental health providers with an overview of expressive writing forms that can be utilized, and implications for professional practice.

Learning Objectives:

To provide fundamental information on working with kinky clients and patients

  1. Summarize the theoretical orientation and therapeutic value of utilizing expressive writing within the counseling setting.
  2. Assess and compare the relationship between expressive writing, emotional and mental health, and one overall life satisfaction.
  3. Describe the process of expressive writing and implication for professional practice within the counseling.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Karla L. Sapp is a native of and currently resides in Liberty County (Midway), Georgia. A graduate of Armstrong Atlantic State University (BS Criminal Justice), South University-Savannah (Master of Arts in Professional Counseling) and Argosy University (Doctorate of Education in Counseling Psychology), Dr. Sapp has been practicing for 8 years, specializing in mental health and addictions counseling. She has experience working in the following settings, In-Patient Acute Hospitalization, Outpatient, and Correctional. Dr. Sapp is the owner of U Matter Consulting and Counseling, currently employed as a Drug Treatment Specialist with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and an Adjunct Psychology Professor at Armstrong State University. Dr. Sapp has served as an Adjunct Faculty in the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program at South University in Savannah, Georgia. Dr. Sapp has previously worked with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice as a Juvenile Probation/Parole Specialist II; Coastal Harbor Health Systems as a Social Service Counselor; and Recovery Place/Liberty County Drug Court as a Substance Abuse Counselor. A scholarly practitioner, Dr. Sapp, has a research interest in lifestyle choices and wellness, offender treatment, developmental trauma and psychology, disaster mental health, and sports counseling/psychology. Dr. Karla L. Sapp currently holds the following licenses and/or certifications: Licensed Professional Counselor (State of Georgia), Nationally Certified Counselor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, Master Addiction Counselor, and Certified Professional Counselor Supervisor. She has presented on a variety of counseling-related topics at an array of national, regional, state, and local conferences.
