The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015) reported that more than 53 million adults living in the United States have a disability. In fact, the United States Department of Labor (2017) stated that persons with disabilities form the largest minority in the country. Regardless of these numbers, persons with disabilities have been marginalized and mistreated for centuries. Our responsibility as professional counselors is to ensure the highest level of care to our clients, and as such, it is vital that we aim to increase our counseling competencies by learning more about persons with disabilities. This webinar will begin by defining the term disability, and explain what constitutes a disability. It will then highlight the evolution of psychosocial attitudes towards individuals with disabilities, and describe various laws and regulations enacted in support of those with disabilities. The webinar will conclude with a discussion of services, resources, and reasonable accommodations that clients with disabilities may benefit from.
