On October 1, 2015 ICD-10-CM replaced ICD-9-CM as the official coding system in healthcare.  Despite its central role in diagnosis and reimbursement, many mental health professionals do not understand the ICD-10-CM and its clinical role in comparison to DSM-5. This program provides an overview of the ICD-10-CM including its organization, classification of mental disorders and coding rules.  Similarities and differences with DSM-5 are contrasted, with the strengths and weaknesses of each system discussed. The program highlights three ways the transition to ICD-10-CM will impact the diagnosis of mental disorders and the use of DSM-5.  The recently released 2017 ICD-10-CM codes are reviewed with special attention paid to the updated codes that recognize many of the new DSM-5 disorders. Participants learn how to write a DSM-5 diagnosis using ICD-10-CM code numbers and become familiar with additional ICD-10-CM codes that are valid but not listed in the DSM-5.
