Florida Legislative Policy Discussion:

Grassroots involvement, interactions between state and federal mental health policy, currently filed bills, and the state of the LMHC scope of practice in Florida

Date: Friday, 9/9/16, 2:00-4:00 pm

Presenter: Corinne Mixon, DPL

Description: The Florida Legislature is made up of individuals that come from varied professional backgrounds. If these legislators are not educated on the LMHC profession, its professional practice climate may become threatened. Legislative and grassroots lobbying seek to provide this education to Florida's elected officials. Corinne will explain what lobbying is, why it is important and how LMHCs can become their own lobbyists. Additionally, Corinne will discuss the interactions between statewide and federal policy and how Florida’s LMHCs can affect change in Washington. Finally, Corinne will discuss the current state of LMHC practice in Florida, bills that may affect LMHCs and how mental health counselors can work with their State Representatives and Senators to enhance their legislative platform.

About the Presenter

Corinne has been a registered lobbyist in the State of Florida for more than 10 years. It was during her time at the University of Alabama that she recognized her deep interest in affecting statewide policy. Corinne interned in Washington D.C. for U.S. Congressman Richard Shelby, Chairman of Banking and Insurance, before graduating from college. After concluding her internship, Corinne began her professional career as a Public Relations Account Manager at the Zimmerman Agency, the largest hospitality-centered communications group in the nation.

Corinne joined the Mixon and Associates lobbying team because of her skills in client-centered communication and administrative policy. Corinne is now Principal at Mixon and Associates where she lobbies for an array of clients ranging from fortune 500 companies and large statewide associations to tech-based-startups and public school districts. However, Corinne specializes in lobbying for statewide health care associations including: the Florida Mental Health Counselors Association, the Independent Funeral Directors of Florida, the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants and the Florida State Oriental Medical Association. Corinne also served as the Interim Executive Director of the Independent Funeral Directors of Florida where she expanded her expertise into association management.

Corinne’s ability to influence policy makers stems, in part, from her ability to raise money for political candidates. Her success in political connectivity began with managing state senate campaign for Speaker Pro Tempore, Rep. Dennis Baxley. Corinne now manages a multitude of political action committees (PACs) on behalf of Mixon and Associates' clients. As the PAC manager, she oversees the delivery of approximately $160-thousand dollars worth of campaign contributions per election cycle. Corinne handdelivers many of these contributions directly to the candidates; thus, providing a benefit to clients withand-without their own political action committees.
